Want a blank desktop?

About a month ago Free Sotware Magazine (an online-only publication) put up my short article on a completely blank Xfce desktop:

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/art … ce_desktop

It was a 'What if...?' speculation, because I really like the Xfce panel and wouldn't give up having it always visible. I have menu-style launchers for 14 most-used applications and 12 most-accessed files in my panel, and I use these several times each hour.

I'm wondering, though, what other Xfce users on this forum might see as necessary pop-ups on a blank desktop, like my xmessage clock?

Re: Want a blank desktop?

I bind gmrun to Alt+p.  Alternatively you could bind dmenu_run from the suckless-tools package to Alt+p, but I prefer gmrun because it's built in gtk.  Gmrun is also nice because of the Tab autocomplete feature.  I also prefer gmrun to the xfce4-appfinder, it just gets the job done quicker.

Re: Want a blank desktop?

Many thanks for that, rusty! gmrun is new to me. I see it has the 'mailto'-open-mail-client feature that's also in exo-open, too. Excellent summary of gmrun at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gmrun
