Tasklist expanding

Say I have applets on the panel to the left of the tasklist with the window buttons and to the right to it, and I want to make tasklist expand to its maximum available width, allocating all free space on the panel and therefore moving right applets to the right side of the panel (example is in the picture below). In another worlds - to align some applet(s) to the right.

Is adding an separator applet with the checked "expand" option to the right of the tasklist on the panel is the only way to achieve this?

Yes, this is what spacers are for.
