Reset default refresh rate

I'm embarrassed to still be such a newbie, but I'm currently stuck with a default 50Hz xrandr rate, and I would like to set it to 60Hz.  The spinbox in the Settings Manager > Display is stuck at the default 50.  I'm uncertain enough about my own understanding of the man xrandr pages to risk messing around in there.  Details: freshly (1 hour) installed Xubuntu 12.04 32-bit, Xfce 4.8.  (I had no such trouble with the 64-bit version on another box).  I would be very grateful for any assistance, and TIA.
