Persistant Admin Authentication

I spent several hours googling and looking for an answer yesterday but couldn't find it.

I remember a couple years ago in the gnome desktop, if you did admin authentication, for say Synaptic, then it would display an icon in the system tray and keep you authenticated for 10 minutes or so. Since I tend to do admin stuff in short bursts, it would be very convienient to have that back on my new xfce4 setup. Does anyone remember the name of that package or gnome applet, or whatever?  Thanks in advance.

For my half-finished install guide, so you can get an idea of my setup, see sidneyharrell.com/install_guide.html

Running 2 laptops with dual monitors linked by synergy, with ubuntu command line base install + xfce4 running on both.
