Mr Goog turned up nada so:
I have a new mouse which has two extra buttons. They on the left side of the mouse in the shape of a forward and reverse arrow and sit perfectly beside where my thumb rests.
These would be very convenient to use as global workspace switchers since I don't seem to have any other use for them in any apps. But how do I enable this function? Is there an editable conf file somewhere I can edit? I recall in my Compiz days that these extra buttons were available for use.
Tks in advance

See if Settings>Window Manager>Keyboard accepts them for the shortcuts.

Tks secipolla but no. That box only accepts keyboard presses. It ignores all mouse actions - even simple left and right click.
I'm on 4.10 if that matters.

You might open a bug report then to see if it can be improved to recognize mouse inputs.

I would also like to be able to change workspaces with something else than rolling the mouse wheel on top of the desktop. Something like “super+wheel” for example… (without the need to put the pointer on top of the desktop.)
