shortuts to files on desktop?

I am running Fedora 17 and xfce 4.8. I am wondering if there is a way to create shortcuts to often-used files on the desktop, or if that is something I can no longer do. (I updated from Fedora 11 and Gnome 2, which let me do this. I switched to xfce because I really did not like Gnome 3.)

The closest I been able to figure is just leaving the files open on one of the screens, but that feels really awkward.

In Terminal, go to ~/Desktop
Create a symbolic link
ln -s <path to a file/dir> [name of the shortcut]

Make sure that icons are shown on desktop : Desktop setting (right click on empty space on desktop) > Icons > Icon type > File/launcher icons

It describes how to set up 'add to favourites' as a thunar custom action, and have a panel item list your favourites.

Like demosthene's suggestion, both of these are good if you have a list of often-used files (like 10 or more). They save you cluttering your desktop with file-launcher icons.

Interesting.
I wonder if it would be too much overhead to make 'Recently used' items more smart like Firefox's address bar showing first the most accessed files.

It might not be technically too hard, but... When I look at my drop-down list of frequently used files, my eye goes to the place in the list where I know I will find the file I want. I would get very, very annoyed if the file positions in my list kept jumping around based on access history.
