Do you have sound outside of Xfce?

Issue resolved.  I ran xfce4-mixer, installed the controls and unmuted the master volume.

Thanks,

Re: [Solved] No Sound new Xfce/Debian install

My solution was to go into Xfce Settings Editor -> xfce4-mixer -> sound-card and click 'reset'. What a relief!

For some reason the variable 'sound-card' disappeared entirely, sound worked when Iogged back in and the 'sound-card' property had a new value equivalent to one of the properties listed under 'sound-cards' (note the 's' on the end) in Xfce Settings Editor -> xfce4-mixer.

My suggestion for people running Debian 8 is to try resetting the variable 'sound-card' and logging out and back in. if that fails, try changing the value of 'sound-card' to the names of different properties under 'sound cards' in Xfce Settings Editor -> xfce4-mixer.
