[Solved] xfce 4.10 desk top issues

System FreeBSD 9.1RC3, xfce 4.10

These are really nits, my real issue is if I should just give up on these things.

1) mouseover on the desktop:
Because of the icon size and screen resolution I am forced to run, this produces an out of focus and rather large ugly version
of the desktop icon.  Is there a way to turn this off?

2) xpad
I am using xpad-current-4.1_2. The 4.10 menu system has pretty much defied all efforts to assign an icon. I was able to edit the system
desktop file in /usr/local/share/applications (for FreeBSD) for 4.6. Is xpad an orphan plugin?

Thanks for any pointers. I really do not have any 'real' issues with 4.10. I have been a happy user since KDE4 proved unusable (for me).

Re: [Solved] xfce 4.10 desk top issues

1) maybe the tooltip size in file:///usr/share/doc/xfdesktop-4.10.0/README

2) icon where?

The FreeBSD package has no README file for xfce4-desktop-4.10.0_1. There is a desktop file:
/usr/local/share/applications/xfce-backdrop-settings.desktop. This file has "Exec=xfdesktop-settings" which is a dynamically loaded file that seems to have a desktop file statically linked in. So I take there would seem to be no setting to control this. My 4.6 system exhibits the same behavior. I did not notice because it is a text block and takes longer to pop up.

2) icon where?

In /usr/local/share/icons. There is no difference between pidgin that works and xpad that does not. In 4.6 I modified the system desktop file for xpad to use the icon for the notepad-plugin. That did not work in 4.10. Neither did copying icon into the Tango and Hicolor directories.

In the menu or on the tray?
For the menu it should work, for the tray/taskbar then it might be hard-coded in xpad.

Thanks I appreciate the idea. I had not tried that. But no creating a launcher can not find the image either.

It may be this is a BSD, or at least a non-Linux, issue because things are placed differently in the file tree. In FreeBSD all things not in the base system are in /usr/local/... From this and other sources Linux, I conclude, does not use /usr/local. Usually stuff like that is washed when porting the application. For me this is an xpad-only issue. All else, including notepad works fine. I just like xpad better.

I was searching for someone to tell me xpad works for their OS.

Usually if you change an icon then you have to reload the icon theme. You can do that by going to the Appearances settings, choosing another icon theme and then choosing back the original.

The answer turned out to the easy to do, if not to find. From the application finder select 'All Applications'. Mouse over xpad (I di not think I cliecked on it). The correct icon then appeared in the notification area.

Ah, the notification area (tray). That one I though would refresh only with a logout (that's why I asked), but it seems you found another trick.
