Sudden logout / X restart

Whilst using GIMP 2.6 I am often suddenly logged out with a loss of all unsaved work. The effect is the same as the CTRL + ALT + Backspace shortcut. I have disabled this in "Session and Startup" to ensure a bad message from the keyboard isn't forcing a logout, but I'm still having this problem.

I'd particularly like to:
Trace what event is causing this (nothing shown in xsession-errors or dmesg)
Disable any other keyboard shortcuts that could be causing this
Add a password prompt to prevent logout being processed without warning.

XFCE 4.8
Mint 13 Maya
HP 2710p tablet/laptop

Have you upgraded your video driver?   I have a Toshiba w/Intel Graphics.  I updated to a new version and wham, intermittent logouts for no reason.   Downgraded back and all is well.
