Hi,
Is there a way to tell a program to draw its output to the desktop? So I would be able to use a browser as the desktop background, for example?
Cheers,

I'm not sure. I saw something similar with the "devilspie", where you can put the terminal as a background.

You can use xwinwrap but for it to display on the background you'll have to disable compositor.

This users bash script uses wmctrl to do something similiar with Terminal. I got it to make mplayer run fullscreen video as the furthermost back window(borderless with the -fs option to mplayer). Technically *could* work with a fullscreen browser or any other running app.
Technically not the desktops background but a hack to simulate the desired effect....
Adjust as necessary.... http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=6762
