xfce4 panel & windows

Ive got xfce4.10 installed and some windows go below/behind the xfce4 panel

how can I stop this ,and make all windows adhere to appearing above the xfce4 panel

Right click on panel, select Panel -> Panel Preferences. Opt out "Don't reserve space od borders".

No that didnt work but thanks anyway

HERE IS SOME PICTURES

Ive select no reserve on borders but the windows keep going below the panel

the color black in pic 3 is the xfce4-panel
the color grey in pic 3 is thunar

the backgorund is thunar going behind the xfce4 panel and the videos Filemanager is thunar window that is open and displayed in the xfce4-panel/windows list..

Don't check the "Don't reserve space on borders" option

tried both before I posted neither works

Ive a good level of copon when it comes to figuring things out but this has escaped me .. again im a gnome user and have been for years and just started using xfce4
I can walk rings around gnome .. just trying to get use to xfce4 and its settings

There are two things as far as I know that makes windows appear below the panel. One is the "struts" that make a maximised window not use the space used by the panel. The "don't reserve space" setting changes this behaviour when maximizing windows as described in this thread.

The other thing is a rule/policy that the panel should always be on top. This can be changed at runtime using the wmctrl tool, as described here:

If you search for wmctrl and xfce panel you will find some of variants on that script. Having the panel always on top may be the more popular setting, but clearly some people like it better the other way.

You can also run this and then click on the panel window, that makes it behave like a normal window which is what I prefer:
xprop -f _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE 32a -set _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_NORMAL

To me the "don't reserve space" setting is stupid when the panel is always on top, why would I ever want to maximize my window and have it partially behind the panel? Would make more sense if this settings combo made the panel appear on bottom.
"don't reserve space" and autohide on the panel might work. I personally don't like autohide because I wan't to be able to see my clock without moving my mouse.

Someone's complaint about panels and later an answer from the developer why they don't think this should be changed.
