Battery indicator applet

Hi all, I'm searching for a battery indicator applet for XFCE4. I tried xfce4-battery-plugin but I think the battery icon is horrible. I liked the gnome one, is there something like the gnome battery indicator for xfce?

I'm using the Ubuntu-Mono-dark icon theme. I searched the web and i found the XFCE Power Manager, which has its own indicator for the top bar. It's like the one i had on gnome and I like it, but I'm having trouble installing it.

It asked for some dependencies, I installed them and run the autogen.sh file, it says that everything worked and that I should now make. Now I'm getting this error:

There is no need to build xfce4-power-manager from source, your distro should have it in its repositories. Which distro are you using?

Have you tried changing the icon theme and does it bring in a more acceptable battery icon?

I tried installing xfce4-power-manager with

sudo apt-get install xfce4-power-manager

It installed correctly, but I don't see the battery icon. If it matters, when I try opening xfce4-power-manager-settings it comes up with an error message:

Could not connect to the XFCE power manager
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken

What should I do?

Try running xfce4-power-manager first:

xfce4-power-manager

However, keep in mind that it may interfere with which-ever power manager you may be currently using (depending on the desktop-environment you are using).

So...which distro are you using? Which desktop environment? It might be easier just to change the icon theme to get the icon that you want (or replace the existing icons in the icon theme).

If I execute that command I see no output on the terminal. Then running the power manager settings it shows a popup that says that the power manager is not running. It seems I can't enable it..

If you've installed Xfce into Ubuntu 11.10, then on the login screen, select the "Xfce session" before logging in. This will load all of the Xfce components including the power manager. Once logged in, you can confirm whether it is running or not via:

ps -ef | grep power-manager | grep -v grep

(i hate unity, and XFCE is lighter than gnome)

Also note that Xubuntu is an official derivative of Ubuntu that runs the Xfce as the default DE (read: no unity).

I know, but when I installed ubuntu I didn't know Xubuntu, and I would like to use XFCE without having to format the linux partition and install xubuntu smile

There is another problem: I see the battery tray icon and it works, but it has a weird top offset, i see half battery because it is not vertically centered on the bar, is there a way to solve this?

Try changing your icon theme to see if changes. Also, go to the Notification plugin properties and look at some of the options there including:
- maximum icon size
- show frame
...see if changing those helps.

Maximum icon size is set to 24, I tried increasing or decreasing it but the problem still remains.
With the "show frame" enabled nothing changes.

I also notice that ubuntu-mono-dark depends on the Humanity icon theme, do you have that one installed?

And finally, if you change the icon theme, do you get the same behaviour?

Row size is 24 and number of rows is 1.

Yes I have both Humanity and Humanity-dark.

Yes I do, unless the battery icon is the vertical one instead of the horizontal one. In that case the icon is centered vertically.

Interesting that I can't replicate this (on Xubuntu 13.10 or Arch), leads me to think that it might be some sort of config issue. Do you have any, or did you place any gtk hacks in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 or /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc that may be affecting this?

If you log in with another account, does this issue present itself there as well?

I did edit the gtkrc of the theme I'm using, I just changed the panel's default font color, but it had that behaviour also with the original gtkrc file.. I don't have other accounts, but if I log into the guest session the battery still has that top offset
