Event sound < 100% shows volume osd

I have everything working perfectly except for one thing; if I lower the volume for event sounds the volume notification pops up whenever an event occurs, kind of annoying.  Any idea on how to resolve this.
I run Debian SID,  Xfce 4.10
all updates in place.
LightDM is login manager

I can't help you with your problem.  But I'm thinkin' you may be able to help me with mine.

How did you get event sounds to work in XFCE with LightDM.  This has been an eternal mystery to me.

I'm using Debian Stable with 4.8.  Is that the diff?

Thanks.
