panels and separators

I have fooled around quite a bit with the panels, adding items etc but I can't find the separators and use them. I would like nothing on my bottom panel except window buttons for open apps and a trash can to the far right edge but can't seem to make the trash can stay all the way to the right. Can someone explain please.

Re: panels and separators

If you don't have a separator on the panel, right-click the panel and select Panel>>Panel Preferences. On the Items tab, click the Add button (right-hand side) and scroll through the list until you see the separator plugin. Click on it once to select it then click the "Add" button. Click "Close" to close the plugin selector dialog.

Back on the Panel Preferences dialog, Items tab, there should be a Separator listed. Move the separator so it is listed before the trash can. Double-click the separator to view its properties and select the "Expand" option.

Re: panels and separators

Which item did you add and where is it added?

From the panel's Items tab, can you list which plugins you have enabled? Something like:
- Window Buttons
- Separator
- Trash
- ???

Is the separator still set as expanding?

Re: panels and separators

yes what I don't understand is how to get a small section to the right locked to hold only the trash and the rest open for the minimized windows. I have the 2 items in the panel but it is split 1/2 and 1/2

Re: panels and separators

I just added a separator to my bottom panel and then a trash to its right. I then went to the separator's properties and checked the expand option. It moved the trash all the way to the right, as (if I understand correctly) you are trying to do.

I then ran several applications in order to see whether or not the above changed the behavior of my window buttons. It did not, they display normally. The trash stays put on the far right-hand side.

IOW, things work as they are expected to. Are you adding the separator next-to-last, then your trash last, then going to the separator and expanding it? That's what I did.

Oddly, doing all of that caused my panel to become unlocked. Go figure. Removing the two items did not relock it, but setting the option did (so my panel is back to the way it was before I decided to try and duplicate your unwanted behavior).

Can you list your distro and the version numbers of the relevant XFCE components? Maybe there was a bug in the past and your distro is using an old version of a component which happens to include it?

Regards,
MDM

Re: panels and separators

Here is how the panel preferences look on mine:

...and the separator properties:

The result is the window buttons stay to the left and the Trash can stays to the right.

I upload the image to zimagez.com then copy/paste the BBCode snippet.

What does the following return:

xfconf-query -c xfce4-panel -lv

Re: panels and separators

Okay, I think I figured out what is happening. On the General tab of the panel properties, there is "Length (%)" setting. Set it to 100. The panel is automatically shrinking to accommodate the content on it.
