I figured this out after a while. Add a separator to the panel then rt cl separator and check expand then move the item all the way to the right.

Re: [Solved] xfce4-panel problem

Welcome to the forum.

You may have an expanding space on the panel. Click on the panel and choose panel > panel preferences and then Items in the dialog that opens. Look down the list and see if there is a Separator item at the bottom of the list. The separator has it's own options setting and this contains the option for the separator to expand, therefore you can have a space of fixed size or a separator that expands dynamically. If you have a separator at the end/bottom of your list of panel items just delete it and things should move to the right edge.

There are separators in various parts of the panel and you can adjust these as you wish. These separators are also used in other panels. I have a left side panel with launchers for my favourite programs and I use expanding separators at top and bottom to centre the panel vertically.
