I'm using Thunar 1.6.3 right now, but I can't seem to find an option to shorten file names. I know this wasn't possible with xfce 4.8: what about the current version?
Thanks a lot guys!

What do you mean by "shorten file names"? Rename them?

Nope. If the name of a file is long, thunar doesn't shorten that name with (...) at the end of it. Instead, it shows the whole name, so I was wondering if there was a way to reduce it. Hopefully you understand what I mean

Hi, Codalunga.
Still a bit unclear to me. If what you want is for Thunar *not* to expand the Name column when you have a long filename, go to View/Configure Columns in the Thunar menu and untick 'Automatically expand columns as needed' under 'Column sizing'.

In case anyone finds this thread after noticing that smallish Thunar windows handle long filenames poorly in compact list view, here's a bug report about it, along with a patch that fixes the problem:

I think Codalunga was refering to shorten file name in View/View as Icons in Thunar. Attached screenshots.
The layout looks inconsistent when filename is very long. If the filename is too long maybe we can shorten filenames and append a "...".
We can consider caja file manager as reference. It does what I just explained.
