Hi
I'm using Slackware 14.1 and Xfce 4.10.
For unknown reason every gtk3 application (prebuild or build on my machine) looks bad - no spaces between labels, some labels cut, no borders in drop-down menus etc. Just look at screenshoot.
I use standard gtk-xfce engine and Xfce-smooth theme.
That's what I have:
gtk+-1.2.10-x86_64-5
gtk+2-2.24.20-x86_64-1
gtk+3-3.8.2-x86_64-2
gtk-xfce-engine-3.0.1-x86_64-1
pygtk-2.24.0-x86_64-1

Long story short.
GTK3 is a moving target. With every major update of GTK3, themes break. The Xfce-smooth theme that you are using is not compatible (has not been updated) to work with GTK 3.8. More info at this bug report. The best thing you can do is use a GTK2/GTK3 theme that is more up to date. I know there are a few, and you can search these forums for those suggestions, but I know that the shimmer themes work quite well.
