How can I get my screen signal back after I power the monitor on and off?
I have an AOC brand display, its one of the types that was made to be a 720p TV and came with a remote control, but has VGA and composit inputs, i have it on an HDMI cable..its not connected to anything else. if i cycle through the inputs, it wont lose the signal, but after powering off the monitor, there is no way get picture back without reboot...
If I dont turn the monitor on during the BIOS screen then I miss the chance to get a picture, and have to reboot again. its not bad but nobody expects that..
I have looked at settings, and DPMS, discovered the monitor will sleep in suspend mode, but picture wont return using "switch off display after xx minutes"

I don't know, if this helps in your case, but have you tried the console command
xrandr --auto
?
It works for me, connecting and disconnecting an external monitor to my laptop.
