Hi everybody,
even though I'm a xfce user for a while I haven't figured out how to show app icons when cycling through windows using Alt+Tab. It shows me thumbnails and it still confuses me. Does anybody know what and where to tweak? Thanks a lot.

What version of Xfce are you using? Window previews in alt-Tab are a recent addition. To disable these window previews, Window Manager Tweaks >> Compositor >> "Show windows preview..."

I'm on the latest 4.10 ... looking at the Window Manager Tweaks >> Compositor I don't see this option there. See the screenshot below please. Isn't it possible to change some config file? I have no idea which one though.
wvi@kryten:~>xfwm4-tweaks-settings -v
xfwm4 4.11.2git.UNKNOWN

Since you're running xfwm4 from git, simply pull/rebuild and you'll get the setting option. It was added in a later commit.
$ xfwm4-tweaks-settings -v
xfwm4 4.11.2git.c64997f
