[Solved] XFCE 4.12 Appearance window closes suddenly.

Hi!  I'm using Xubuntu 14:10 which uses XFCE as it's DE.  This morning I ran Software Updater & Just got upgraded to XFCE 4.12 & noticed one quirk.  Whenever I click on Appearances the program opens up for about 1-3 seconds & then closes.  Does it in the Settings Manager window too.  Thus am unable to change themes.  I tried running it in xterm & got this error message:

***MEMORY-ERROR***: xfce4-appearance-settings[6594]: GSlice: failed to allocate 504 bytes (alignment: 512): Cannot allocate memory

Aborted

Lucky for me, I installed the xfce-theme-manager PPA as shown  here: http://www.webupd8.org/2013/06/xfce-the … hange.html so I can now change themes.

Is this just a bug in appearances,  because I am using the “Xubuntu Developers” team 4-12 PPA?

Re: [Solved] XFCE 4.12 Appearance window closes suddenly.

It looks like this bug which has been marked as fixed. In fact, comment #10 contains the same error message as you have received.

I notice from the 4.12 PPA that an update was done about 8 hours ago. Maybe try another update in case your not fully up to date.

Also, what version of xfce4-settings are you running?

apt-cache policy xfce4-settings

If the problem persists, you may want to contact the PPA maintainers or post directly into that bug report.

I got this:

:~$ apt-cache policy xfce4-settings
xfce4-settings:
  Installed: 4.12.0-0ubuntu1~14.10
  Candidate: 4.12.0-0ubuntu1~14.10
  Version table:
 *** 4.12.0-0ubuntu1~14.10 0
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12/ubuntu/ utopic/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     4.11.3-0ubuntu2 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ utopic/universe i386 Packages

At least it's a known/fixed bug.  Gonna try to update again & see if that fixes it.  Thanks! wink

EDIT:  Tried updating & that fixed it.  big_smile
