Study XFCE

Hello everyone

I'm a student in computer science and I would like to study the XFCE internal structure for my Operating Systems exam final paper.
But I don't know where and how to start study it.
Can someone explain me how to start xfwm in debug and follow step by step a little portion of code?
For example, I want to understand how xfwm manages keyboard input or how it draws a window into the screen.
Is it difficult? I hope no, because I like XFCE very much and I wish to study it
