- how to terminate just the battery panel applet, instead of terminating the entire panel? I cannot find anything containing the name "battery" in task manager.

Depending on the version of Xfce you are using that would be the Power Manager plugin. Also the current version of the Power Manager has a settings option to show the System Tray icon.

If you're referring to xfce4-power-manager (1.2.0 on this particular system), right-click its icon and then left-click on the "Quit" option. That might do it.

i'm speaking about the xfce Battery Monitor Panel Applet, which looks like this:
when you right-click it, there is no "quit" option. It's a panel applet, so when you right-click it, the panel menu pops up: Properties, About, Move, Remove, Panel>.
