Hi,
I already wrote about my problem in another thread but had the feeling that I hijacked the thread so I start my own now.
I am using a Lenovo Thinkapd T520 notebook and have a problem to shutdown/restart using the GUI (xfce4-session-logout) when the nvidia proprietary drivers are installed and the notebook sits in a dockingstation with only an external monitor as display.
Scenario 1: Shutdown triggered using the GUI (xfce4-session-logout)
* If I click on shutdown I find myself back at the login screen.
* If I login again everything looks normal except that the NetworkManager is disabled and I cannot enable it anymore.
* If then I execute in a terminal "sudo shutdown now" the computer suspends(!). If I wake it up with the power button I just see a blank screen (I guess because it resumes from the point where it supended and all services etc. are killed). I then have to hold the power button for several seconds to turn off the computer. Afterwards I can restart normally.
Scenario 2: Shutdown triggered on the command line
* "sudo shutdown now" works perfectly
* "/usr/bin/pkexec /usr/lib/xfce4/session/xfsm-shutdown-helper --shutdown" works perfectly as well
If I uninstall the nvidia driver and install the nouveau driver everything works as expected.
Here are some excerpts from the journal from the point I triggered the shutdown until reboot/login screen:
FAILS: journal-nvidia-gui-logout-shutdown.txt: http://pastebin.com/8LhHYh47
WORKS: journal-nouveau-gui-logout-shutdown.txt: http://pastebin.com/QncydhBV
WORKS: journal-nvidia-xfsm-shutdown-helper.txt: http://pastebin.com/QuzxWe8p
WORKS: journal-nvidia-shutdown_now.txt: http://pastebin.com/RiNgVEsP
In the first journal excerpt one can see that although I triggered a "shutdown" everywhere is written "sleep" or "suspend". Why?
Are any experts here who are able to interpret the journal messages?
What can I do? How can I further debug the problem?
I tried nvidia drivers 304, 340 and 352 on Xubuntu 15.04 and Manjaro Linux. The problem occurs on a freshly installed system!
I tried "nomodeset", "acpi=off" etc., but it had no effect. Further, I searched the whole internet without finding a solution.
Any help is highly appreciated!
Best wishes,
Klaus
