Dual monitor setup will not work unless I suspend before logging in.

Hi, I am using Xubuntu 15.04. I have a second monitor with a 1024x768 display that I would like to connect as an extended display to my Macbook Pro (1440x900) using a mini-display port to VGA adapter and a thunderbolt port. The monitor that I am trying to connect will not display anything unless I suspend the system before I login; I don't know why, but suspending has always been able to make the monitor to work even when it doesn't want to. Once I login after suspending, I always have to reconfigure the display settings using the control panel because the previous display settings are never saved and they don't start up automatically. I've tried using ARandR to save the settings into a shell script and adding the script to the Application Autostart menu, yet it hasn't worked at all. Is there any way that I could get my second monitor to automatically work when I login without having to suspend the system and change the settings every time I want to use it?
All help is appreciated.
