I'm unexpectedly getting a mostly empty Settings Manager screen, with many applications absent that used to be there (Software&Updates, Users and Groups, for example).
Last thing I remember doing was going from nvidia drivers to nouveau, which seems unrelated.
(Some other things changed as well: with nouveau, it suddenly required a login screen, which reverted when going back to nvidia, and desktop fonts are suddenly double their former size, which did not revert - everything rather fishy, insights into why that might have happened are welcome but my primary focus is is getting xfce4-settings-manager back).
What seems to have happened is that the X-XFCE-Xxx category settings got clobbered.
How might that have happened?
What's the best way to restore them? (apt-get purge && apt-get install is a viable option, I never changed anything about these apps, though I did change some settings in desktop color and installed some themes that I eventually didn't use anyway).
For reference, here's the category in which Settings Manager displays each application, if at all:

Hello and welcome.
All of the "not shown" items are actually items added to the Settings Manager by U/Xubuntu (not part of upstream Xfce). U/Xubuntu has its own configuration files to make this happen. Assuming it is Xubuntu that you are using, these configuration files are part of the xubuntu-default-settings package. Ensure that it is installed.
Also have a look at ~/.config/menus. Any existing xfce-applications.menu or xfce-settings-manager.menu files will overwrite the default ones. If an xfce4-settings-manager.menu file exists here, try re-naming it so it is not processed and the default xfce-settings-manager.menu file is used instead.
