[Solved] Trying to get top panel to be black when in maximized state..

Hey guys, as the title says I am trying to get the top panel (taskbar) to overlap with the windows and the applications when they are maximized.

I'm new here and new to linux, sorry I could phrase my question better. Here are a few pictures for reference:

http://imgur.com/a/o5Wuj and http://imgur.com/a/Koza1 I took them from reddit, I'm trying to make my setup look like them.

Look at how when they are on the desktop the top panel is transparent. But when they maximize something the top panel turns black. I want to know how I can do the same.

When I try to do it, my top panel stays transparent and does not turn black, just transparent. I tried checking "Don't reserve spaces.." in panel settings but it just merged with the maximized window while staying on top, didn't do anything similar to these pictures. I'm on Arch by the way.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Solved] Trying to get top panel to be black when in maximized state..

Hello and welcome.

Its not that the panel is changing to a dark colour, its the titlebar of the maximized window that is now appearing behind the panel. To get this effect you need to do the following:

1. Make the panel transparent
2. Set the panel to "Don't reserve space on borders" (this will allow the window title bar to appear behind the panel)
3. Set the panel "Row Size" to be approximately the same size as the window titlebar.
4. Use a Window Manager theme with a dark title bar
5. Use a Window Manager theme that has no window controls on the left side (or remove them via Settings Manager > Window Manager > Button Layout)
6. Shorten the length of the panel so that there is a gap by the right side of the screen to allow the window controls of the maximized window to appear and not be overlapped by the panel
7. Make sure that the window manager doesn't hide the title bars when maximized (Settings Manager > Window Manager Tweaks > Accessibility > Hide title of windows when maximized)

That should do it.

Re: [Solved] Trying to get top panel to be black when in maximized state..

Thanks for the reply. That has done it except for one thing. My desktop looks like this now when maximized http://i.imgur.com/b97vfIMl.png

If I could get it to not leave empty space at the top like that, it would be perfect! Thanks for the help man!

EDIT: Nevermind, fixed this was something to do with margins.
