This xfce 4.12_1. The title kinda says it all. The file is no longer in ~/Desktop. If you access the icon you get a popup: "Error when getting information for <path>/home/user/<filename>: No such file or directory"
The icon remains until xfce is restarted. This happens if the desktop is lock or not.

You're running on FreeBSD, right? I've noticed a number of FreeBSD xfdesktop bug reports created just recently:
- https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12171
- https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12174
If you can first quit xfdesktop:
xfdesktop -Q
...then run it with debug mode enabled:
xfdesktop -e
...you might get some good debug information about what is happening. Might be useful to add it to the relevant bug report.
