I have a set-up where I run Linux in a VirtualBox (under Windows), and use VNC to create another "side-display" on another monitor into the same session (VirtualBox does not seem to support multiple displays for the same VM). I can run another xfwm4 instance on this display, but not another xfce4-panel ("xfce4-panel: There is already a running instance"). This makes starting programs on the side-display a bit inconvenient. I wonder if there is some workaround?

Can you create a new Panel 2, move it over there, and install the same launchers as on Panel 1?
MX-23 (based on Debian Stable) with our flagship Xfce 4.18.

This does not work because the environment inside the VNC session has a different X11 connection (different X11 server instance). Just the user and home directory is the same. This is why I was surprised the panel refused to start another instance. I suspect this is a safety check in case both instances try to modify configuration files under the home directory, but my case this would be unlikely, as there is really just one user.

I don't believe you can do that with xfce4-panel - its not coded to allow multiple copies running simultaneously. Perhaps you can use a different type of panel on the second display, like tint2?
