i'd like for my volume up and down buttons to work

i'm using a PCLinuxOS install with a Windoze keyboard that has Start, Mute, Change channel, etc. as well as Vol. Up and Vol. Down buttons. The Start, Stop and Change Channels work but the Vol. Up and Vol. Down do not.

i've tried installing the xfce4-mixer but it doesn't seem to work. i also saw a thread here which i used to set Settings, Keyboard Shortcut commands "amixer set Master 5dB-" and the "amixer set Master 5dB+ unmute", but these don't seem to work either.

It appears that we are using the Alsa mixer.

Hello and welcome.

What version of Xfce does PCLinuxOS run?

Have a look to see if xfce4-volumed is running. If not, try starting it up to see if it helps.

If you run those commands manually in a terminal window, does the volume change? Try also with:

amixer set Master 5%-
amixer set Master 5%+

If PCLinuxOS uses pulseaudio, you can also try installing xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin and making sure that "Enable keyboard shortcuts for volume control" is enabled.

Thanks, ToZ! i tried the two commands in Term and they work! It appears we are using Ver. 4.12.3

xfce4-volumed is not running.
