smart tiling leaves gaps

Hi,

when using the smart tiling option, it leaves me with gaps.  That is unusual, I did not expect that and I would like the windows to be tiled without gaps.  I found a bug report from 2007, which does not help me.  First I thought, it depends on the wm-theme, but it does not matter.  What did I do wrong?  Is there a way to smart tile without gaps?  This is, what it looks like (to make it easily visible, I used a yellow desktop background).

EDIT (after screenshots): It seems to be application-dependent. Firefox, Tunar, PCManFM and Mousepad are tiling gapless, while xfce4-terminal and HexChat are tiling with gaps.
