Startup or .xinitrc?

I was trying to find out how to have the numlock activated on startup.  The FAQ says to download and then place "numlockx on" in your .xinitrc file.  I didn't have a .xinitrc file in my home directory and before reading further I added it to the startup applications section.
Eventually I read where I could add it to the system wide .xinitrc file or just create a new file myself.

My question; Is putting "numlock on" in the .xinitrc file better or any different than putting it in the startup applications?
How are the two options processed that makes one better than the other?

If it matters for this question Ubuntu 10.4 with gnome and Xfce 4.6 added.

Re: Startup or .xinitrc?

It really doesn't matter, if the job is done correctly.

.xinitrc (or .xsession) is read every time X is started, even if it's not running Xfce, and you can run commands before the WM. "startup applications" is specific to Xfce and will run after Xfce (Xfwm) has been started.

Re: Startup or .xinitrc?

Upgrade to 4.8 which remembers and restores the numlock state.

Re: Startup or .xinitrc?

Hi Dr. Nick!
I am thinking I will have to upgrade to 4.8 as I see a few other features I would like.  I have to install it myself as Ubuntu's Long Term Support version doesn't seem to have long term support for the latest versions of software.
I am not sure when I will have the time to compile myself and make the upgrade.

EDIT:
Nick, I am having upgrade issues, (32bit vs 64bit) and those are being discussed in this thread.  http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=6055
