Restoring default XFCE menu for Ubuntu Studio

I am new to Linux, but have been using Ubuntu Studio for a few weeks happily.  After rebooting though, I suddenly ended up in what I think is Unity.  I changed back into XFCE at the log in screen, but the menu options and icons still seem locked into the Unity format.  I have found two files which seem to be displaying the different menu formats in : /etc/xdg/menus/applications-merged/studio.menu        and:    /etc/xdg/xdg-ubuntustudio/menus/xfce-applications.menu       I've considered over writing one file with another but, given read-write protection and my newness to Ubuntu, I don't want to make matters worse!   Thanks for any help!

Re: Restoring default XFCE menu for Ubuntu Studio

Hello and welcome.

If you've selected Xfce at the login screen, you should get Xfce. Can you post back a screenshot so that we can see what you are seeing?

And maybe also the results of:

ps -ef

...on a fresh login.

Re: Restoring default XFCE menu for Ubuntu Studio

Thanks so much ToZ for your reply.

I'm hoping the following shows my incorrect menu, I haven't tried to post images to forums before.   How should I be making a thumbnail image?

Thanks so much ToZ for your reply.

I'm hoping the following shows my incorrect menu, I haven't tried to post images to forums before.   How should I be making a thumbnail image?

https://imgur.com/TdWUgs9

That looks like the whiskermenu. How exactly is it incorrect? Are you wanting to use the regular applications menu?

I am wanting the original Ubuntu Studio setup.  After doing a google image search it looked something like this:

I don't know why Unity or other changes suddenly occurred.

Toz is correct, that is the WhiskerMenu in both cases. It looks like in one, the panel has been moved to the bottom and in your next image, it was on the top as a top bar.
If you could, please right click the panel and select "Panel Preferences." Then you will see a pop up window with an option to lock of unlock the panel. Please unlock it.
Then, hover your mouse cursor over the End of the panel (Either end will work) and then click to grab and drag it up to the top. If restoring that position looks like what you have in mind, we have succeeded in solving one problem.
EDIT-- Correction: it looks like it is two rows and not all the way across in the second image. I need my eyes checked. For posterity, my original submission was: (Next, in that same Panel Preferences Pop up, adjust the slider to be 1 row instead of two and check that it goes all the way across- which I THINK is what you show in the second image.)
If that satisfies, then problem solved. The remaining problem is figuring out what caused it to change.
On a sidenote, being new to a system does not make you any less of a user, but makes the system unfamiliar. This change could be beneficial in that it is helping you explore the system and become more familiar. I would encourage you to continue to explore that Panel Preferences Popover window and see what powers you can unlock to suit your needs and wants to the fullest.:)

Re: Restoring default XFCE menu for Ubuntu Studio

Thank you Aravisian!  Please stay patient with me!
Have I posted the image menus correctly?  The Ubuntu Studio menu is different, in content,
to what I currently have.

I now have this :

My original was more like this (with the Audio / Video Production areas etc)   :
https://imgur.com/AdE3Wj6

Can you see what I mean?

Hmmm, Yes, I think I do. Please also be patient with me.
It looks like both use Whiskermenu.
However, in the version you had/want, it includes a menu entry for "Ubuntu Studio Information."
The background theme has changed, from a white applications window, to being an inset off color from the category window.
Ordinarily, I would think it was just a simple theme change, however the presence of "Ubuntu Studio Information" in one but lacking in the other would require that a menu entry be changed and a theme cannot do that.
I think that I was wrong to first approach it that way.
That is not "Unity", however. Those look like XFCE4 Panel and Whiskermenu still. But The Ubuntu Studio portion seems removed from the desktop environment.

To find out how that changed, would need to know a lot more. But for now, can you open a terminal and enter the following command?

sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-installer

Did it show an installation take place? Did it say anything was upgraded? Or did the terminal messages say that you are using the latest version?
Yes, you might reboot OR log out, then log in. When you go to log in, however, at the upper right there should be an option to change the desktop Environment. You may see the XFCE logo up at the upper right. Please take a look up there and select the Desktop Environment Option and ensure that you are logging in to the correct desktop - then enter your password and log in as normal.

I am sorry, I have never used Ubuntu Studio, so I do not know a lot about it.
Looking at your output above:

  accountsservice-ubuntu-schemas activity-log-manager gir1.2-gst-plugins-bad-1.0
  gstreamer1.0-adapter-pulseeffects gstreamer1.0-autogain-pulseeffects
  gstreamer1.0-convolver-pulseeffects gstreamer1.0-crystalizer-pulseeffects

  libunity-control-center1 linux-headers-lowlatency python-dbus.mainloop.pyqt5
  ubuntustudio-lowlatency-settings ubuntustudio-performance-tweaks zam-plugins

Those are pacakges that are listed as "no longer needed" which implies that something was uninstalled somehow that would use them.
Or that something was replaced in an update: However since you are noting that something is missing...
The previous posts had you install the Ubuntu-Studio-Installer. With my lack of experience, I considered it may run by installation.
However, maybe it did not and perhaps you need to run that installer.
In terminal, what happens if you enter:

ubuntustudio-installer

Re: Restoring default XFCE menu for Ubuntu Studio

If its a menu items issue, perhaps something was overwritten in ~/.config/menus. Try renaming that folder (to say menus.old to keep it around in case you still need it) to see if there is a difference. By renaming or removing that folder, it will revert to using the default one.

Also have a look at ~/.local/share/desktop-directories. Is there any content in there?

Maybe also post back the results of:

env | grep xdg

...to see if any environment variables have been switched.

Thanks Aravisian.  I ran the Installer software and it came up with this program :

I didn't enable Backports, but did end up running and installing all packages.
Unfortunately still no changes!

Re: Restoring default XFCE menu for Ubuntu Studio

Hi ToZ.  I think you are thinking of something similar to my original thoughts.
I think the menu structures might be defined in the files that I mention in my
first post?  Does that seem right?  I'm not sure of how to rename, copy files
under Ubuntu given the write protection attributes?

Terminal command  "env | grep xdg" returns:
XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg/xdg-xfce:/etc/xdg:/etc/xdg

Re: Restoring default XFCE menu for Ubuntu Studio

Before I joined this forum I had a very similar experience with Mint. All I had done was a Ctrl-Alt-F1 to check an instruction for someone, then Ctrl-Alt F7 to get back to the GUI and my menu had changed even to the point I had the mouse icon instead of Mint's own menu icon. Rebooting was no help.

I never did figure out how to solve it as I though it was a perfect opportunity to test my Timeshift snapshot, which worked to restore the system. I just now looked to see if Timeshift created any logs that might here, but they're not useful I'm afraid.

I'm hoping someone can help you get this solved as I've shied away from ever trying the same thing again and I'm betting whatever fixes you would have fixed me.

Come to think of it... Now that you say that- I have had that happen to me that my Whiskermenu arbitrarily reset itself to default. I didn't hit any keys before hand, it happened after a reboot.
I didn't think much of it, other than annoyed, and just set my menu back up to my usual standard.

BlueCode, please right click your Whisker Menu and open the Menu Editor. Look through it and see if Ubuntu Studio software is listed in it, but UNChecked.

Re: Restoring default XFCE menu for Ubuntu Studio

Hey guys, thanks for your persistence in trying to help me.

I didn't think of right clicking on the whisker menu icon.   It comes up with "Whisker Menu" and four tabs : Appearance / Behaviour / Commands / Search Actions.  I don't see any option for the "Menu Editor".  I see no options for "Ubuntu Studio".

Aravisian, it did go wrong for me, after a reboot.  It then went, without prompting into what I think was Unity.  I logged out, and then went in under XCFE.  But it had changed the Whisker menu options and icons.

Like I said, I'm knew to Ubuntu.  Is there anyway of doing a system restore, like a MS Windows Restore Point?  Is that what you mean MrEen, by a timeshift?  Please educate me!  (I love time-machines)!

Re: Restoring default XFCE menu for Ubuntu Studio

Timeshift is an app that performs something similar to Windows Restore. You can check it out here: https://github.com/teejee2008/timeshift

Linux Mint devs fell in love in love with the idea and now include it as part of the install. You'll want to use the PPA version I believe as I don't think the Ubuntu repos carry it.

Two cautions on it's use:

1. Setting up automatic snapshots can fill a drive quickly if you're not careful.

2. Even though it allows use on your home directory, it's off by default. I'd recommend leaving it that way, as there's no way to pick and choose what you restore. It's all or nothing, so recent files/changes got wiped out the one time I used it. Use another method for backing up your personal files.

Regarding what Aravisian said, does right clicking on the menu icon show "Edit Applications"? That's what you should click on. Sounds like you clicked on Preferences.

Re: Restoring default XFCE menu for Ubuntu Studio

Thanks for the timeshift info MrEen, and your precautions!

When I right click whisker icon, options are :
  (Whisker Menu ) / Properties / Above / Move / (Edit Applications) / Remove / Panel

Parts in brackets are greyed out - so I can't select the "Edit Applications" option.

I can only select : Properties / Above / Move / Remove / Panel >
