Unexpected screen locks with xfce4-power-manager

I'm using xfce4-power-manager 1.7.0 on gento, but had the same problem with 1.6.6. I get unexpected screen locks. It looks like these are caused by google chrome turning off whatever it uses to inhibit the screen saver when a video is playing; the lock happens immediately (despite mouse movement to, e.g., close a page). Similarly it happens (sometimes) by turning on and off Presentation Mode in the Power Manager Plugin widget. (Again, as soon as I turn if off, despite having just moved the mose and clicked in the box.)

The relevant xset -q setting look okay:

Screen Saver:
  prefer blanking:  no    allow exposures:  no
  timeout:  600    cycle:  3600
...
DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 600    Suspend: 600    Off: 600
  DPMS is Disabled

I've looked in the xfce bugzilla and didn't see anything that looked similar, but maybe I'm not looking for the right words.

Any idea what could be going wrong, and more generally how to debug it?

Hello and welcome.

Are you using xfce4-screensaver, and if so, which version? Significant inhibitor bugs were fixed and released in version 0.1.9.

Thanks! Yes, I was using xfce4-screensaver-0.1.8. I'll try 0.1.9 and see if that helps.

A couple of issues here.

First, for the deb that you are trying to install, xfce4-screensaver requires a newer version of libxfce4ui than your distro provides.

Second, it looks like you just grabbed a deb from somewhere else and tried installing it. This process generally doesn't work. In fact, whoever created that deb made it dependent of libxfce4ui 4.13, which is not an actual dependency of xfce4-screensaver - it will build and run with 4.12. Your best best is to approach your distro provider to see if they will provide an updated version of xfce4-screensaver. OR, if you are comfortable with it, you can try building your own package from source. Have a read through these debian instructions.

Looks like your also trying to install a testing release. Not really a bad thing depending on what your expecting. 4.12 and 4.14 are stable releases with 4.13 being testing. I would imagine that they are now working on 4.15(testing). There is no point to installing an old testing version unless it for entertainment value. What version of Debian are you running?
