How to Start xfce After Uninstalling xfce4-session?

Steps given in this other thread don't work (also, didn't want to necropost). i'm guessing the reason is that those steps require that xfce4-session remain installed, correct?

https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=49586#p49586

i copied /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc to the ~/.config/xfce4 folder. Didn't help. (Also, since trying, the file seems to have disappeared from ~/.config/xfce4 folder)

rename /usr/bin/xfce4-session (to /usr/bin/xfce4-session.BAK).
that file doesn't exist (maybe cuz i uninstalled xfce4-session?). I used the copy that i found in /etc/X11/xinit/

manually edit the /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc file and change the line that reads:
xfwm4 --daemon

that line doesn't exist

So, how to start xfce after uninstalling xfce4-session?

i installed xinit. That might have helped, but that didn't solve it.

startxfce4 gives "command not found"
startx and xinit give errors. Here's the log from xinit as non-root user:

i thought it might be a permissions thing. I did chroot into the OS (from another OS), and set permissions, but that didn't help:
chmod -R 777 /lib/xorg

Steps here also failed. .Xsession didn't exist, so i created it.

Re: How to Start xfce After Uninstalling xfce4-session?

Hello johnywhy,

So, you do not have a graphical User Interface anymore, because your xsession aborts imidiately, because starting xfce fail, because xfce4-session cannot be found? (X is starting as from your output, right?)

But you can boot into terminal session (I do not know ArchLabs; in Archlinux you find text console with CTL-ALT-F2 - CTL-ALT-F6). Login with your password and you can use your package management to install the needed packages (xfce4-session?).

Ciao,
Photor

Re: How to Start xfce After Uninstalling xfce4-session?

Hi Photor
Yes, yes, yes, and yes.
But I don't want to reinstall xfce4-session. I want to run xfce without xfce4-session.

Thx

Re: How to Start xfce After Uninstalling xfce4-session?

Making a little progress.

There is no need to run a session manager with xinit/startx, jut start your WM in your xinitrc
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1689112

to start a different window manager or desktop environment, first create a copy of the default xinitrc in your home directory:

$ cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc

Then edit the file and replace the default programs with desired commands.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit#xinitrc

I copied xinitrc to my home dir, and replaced the default apps at the bottom with
exec xfwm4

This gets me a mouse, but no desktop. Just a black screen with a mouse.

Re: How to Start xfce After Uninstalling xfce4-session?

Other people are seeing this issue. i don't know if any of these will help.

https://github.com/linuxdeepin/develope … issues/213
https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index. … 10851.html

Some things i'll try, based on those links:

reinstall video driver. Maybe xf86-video-intel.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xo … stallation

install any missing packages. On arch:
pacman -Syu

exec gsettings reset com.deepin.dde.display brightness
-- unsure what the xfce equivalent is, but maybe something to do with brightness?

Use journalctl to check boot journal.

Any other suggestions?

thx

Re: How to Start xfce After Uninstalling xfce4-session?

Reinstall video driver xf86-video-intel didn't help.

Install missing packages didn't help.

Boot journal looks normal.

Another clue: on startx, i'm seeing Xorg error : xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted)

Might be syntax error in a config file. But i don't have /etc/i3. Some other config file?
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/xf86enablei … ed/21771/6

or permissions issue. I'll try this.
https://xorg.freedesktop.narkive.com/yy … ormal-user
[Update] Tried this:
sudo chown root $prefix/Xorg
sudo chmod u+s $prefix/Xorg
Chown worked. Then chmod gave "file or directory not found"

Re: How to Start xfce After Uninstalling xfce4-session?

Nothing helped so far. Still getting a mouse pointer with blank screen.

I tried putting this into my xinitrc, but didn't help. Do i have the order wrong? Do i need to put gtk in there?

xfwm4 &
xfconfd &
xfsettingsd &
xfdesktop &
xfce4-panel &
xfce4-tips &
xfce4-volumed &
exec xfce4-menu-plug

---

Removed old session cache. Didn't help.

Tried running rootless. Didn't help

Re: How to Start xfce After Uninstalling xfce4-session?

I once got the idea in my head to do away with Plymouth while using a Gnome Desktop. I did a dumb and uninstalled it in a big hurry without looking at what it was taking with it.
Which... was pretty much everything.

Another time, I tried uninstalling Nautilus File Manager and Zeitgeist from a Gnome Desktop Environment. Chaos ensued, cats were breeding with dogs and the Earth was flooded. In sheeps blood.

It's a sad thing, but these days, Many things are integrated with many other things which you would not expect. Why does rmoving Plymouth, which is Only a Splash screen (and login if you encrypted your drive) at boot up take the entire DE with it?

I think no amount of tweaking will get you the result you have decided to shoot for.
Many of these systems work together and rely on eachother and if you take away one of them, you are also taking away a significant chunk of what makes the whole thing work. Like taking cogs out of a watch.

Re: How to Start xfce After Uninstalling xfce4-session?

@Aravisian, you're welcome to your opinion! Because it sounds like just that-- an opinion.

You haven't offered any knowledge-based details for why it explicitly couldn't work-- only:

"I once tried to do such-and-such COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THING AND IT DIDN'T WORK BECAUSE I DON'T ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND HOW IT WORKS, and therefor that proves that you can't do something else entirely."

I'm not persuaded big_smile You're simply offering discouragement, not information  sad

smile

Achieving this may require learning exactly what -session is doing under the hood. Whether i have the time and/or ability is a different question  sad

big_smile

My motivation is to eliminate the always-running -session process. Who knows, maybe there's a way to achieve that without removing it  yikes

Re: How to Start xfce After Uninstalling xfce4-session?

@johnywhy, why not ask the developers directly if this can be done. The best way to reach them is via the xfce4-dev mailing list.

Your points about not my giving a clear reason are valid. It seemed like analogous situations might help explain something, but direct works, too:
The XFCE-Session is what starts up the applications required for XFCE-D.E. to run. Without the session, you cannot start and run the D.E.

Re: How to Start xfce After Uninstalling xfce4-session?

this post gives a script for loading xfce without session manager:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=222794

X -keeptty -nolisten tcp -br +bs vt1 &
export DISPLAY=":0.0"
sleep 8
xfsettingsd --sm-client-disable
xfwm4 --sm-client-disable --daemon
xfce4-panel --sm-client-disable &
xfdesktop --sm-client-disable &

When i run it, get a black screen with a mouse pointer.
How to get the full desktop?

thx

Re: How to Start xfce After Uninstalling xfce4-session?

I tried a minimal install for xfwm and had the same problem - mouse showed up on black desktop.  i *had* to install xfce4-session.
the xinit/startx files are too difficult for me.
Since you run Arch, i think ArchWiki and forum might know more about this, because Arch seems to specialize in minimalism more.
I found great info on ArchWiki, but still find setting up a minimal system very difficult.
XFCE still has too much bloat for many people.
