[solved] Starter: looking for another symbol: symbol not found

My system: Xfce 4.14.2

When we click right on a starter, we can choose "edit starter". After we can click on the "symbol" button and look for another symbol.

But it feels like it does not find a lot of my symbols.

For example: Why does it not find all this symbols?:

By default, it will only show those that are part of your icon theme. However, if you select "Image Files" from the "Select icon from" dropdown, you should be able to search for an use any icon on your system.

Re: [solved] Starter: looking for another symbol: symbol not found

My symbol theme is "Tango".

Thank you @ToZ for this valuable information. I think this is right in general.

But it finds also ...
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/galculator.svg
... which is not in the "/usr/share/icons/Tango" folder.

But it does not find the following two symbols:
/usr/share/icons/HighContrast/32x32/apps/accessories-calculator.png
/usr/share/icons/HighContrast/scalable/apps/accessories-calculator.svg

My expectation was, that either it will find  all of this three ...
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/galculator.svg
/usr/share/icons/HighContrast/32x32/apps/accessories-calculator.png
/usr/share/icons/HighContrast/scalable/apps/accessories-calculator.svg

... or none of them, because all of this three are not in the "/usr/share/icons/Tango" folder.

(?)

Re: [solved] Starter: looking for another symbol: symbol not found

If your current theme doesn't provide icons for some actions or elements, the hicolor subdirectory will be searched for. Third-party applications always install their own icon in this subdirectory, as recommended by the Icon Theme Specification.

Re: [solved] Starter: looking for another symbol: symbol not found

Thank you. This helps.

Other subject:
It looks like symbols moved into "~/.local/share/icons/" are only available after a new boot. Right?
That has also confused me, because I thought first, that it does not find symbols in ."~/.local/share/icons/"

I don't think a reboot is required.

gtk-update-icon-cache -f -t ~/.icons/<theme_name>

should suffice. See https://wiki.xfce.org/howto/install_new_themes

That has also confused me, because I thought first, that it does not find symbols in ."~/.local/share/icons/"

In GTK 3, that path is searched first:

  i = 0;
  priv->search_path[i++] = g_build_filename (g_get_user_data_dir (), "icons", NULL);
  priv->search_path[i++] = g_build_filename (g_get_home_dir (), ".icons", NULL);

g_get_user_data_dir() retrieves the value of $XDG_DATA_HOME, which defaults to $HOME/.local/share.
