Rename "Desktop" folder

I would like to rename the "Desktop" folder (it is "Bureau" for me in French) to "desktop" ("bureau").

I create "bureau" and indicate it as the new default folder for Desktop:

xdg-user-dirs-update --set DESKTOP "$HOME/bureau"

After a reboot, "bureau" is the new default folder. I delete "Bureau" but the problem is "Bureau" is automatically recreated. Outside xfce I have only "bureau", when I log to xfce (even when thunar is not started yet), "Bureau" is automatically created.

How can I get rid of "Bureau"?

P-S: user-dirs.dirs confirms the change is saved

$ cat ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
# This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
# If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're
# interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run.
# Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
# homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
# absolute path. No other format is supported.
#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/bureau"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/

Re: Rename "Desktop" folder

Have a read through "man xdg-user-dirs-update". There is mention there of a user-dirs.locale file and an auto-running of xdg-user-dirs-update (look in your startup applications for a "User folders update" entry). The combination would probably lead to the issue you are seeing.

You could uncheck the entry in Startup Applications so it doesn't auto-run on every startup of Xfce.
