Install Xfce 4.16+ on Ubuntu 20.04

Hi,

i have xubuntu running on my desktop and my notebook. The desktop is running with xfce 4.16, my notebook with a 4.17. There is a ppa for the test version but it seams there are no packages in the ppa. xfce 4.18 is not installable on ubuntu 20.04. is there any way to install the test version (that worked without problems on ubuntu 20.04)? Is there an other ppa with that packages?

https://itsubuntu.com/how-to-upgrade-to … on-ubuntu/ - the directions at this link show a PPA that seems to have 22.04 packages in the PPA. Is this the ppa you are talking about?

Re: Install Xfce 4.16+ on Ubuntu 20.04

This is the repo i used to update from 4.14 to 4.16 on xubuntu 20.04. But this doesn't work anymore. It seems the packages for 20.04 where deleted.

On my notebook (also with xubuntu 20.04) the installed version of thunar is 4.17.8. The package "xfce4" is not installed and other packages have different versions. I can't remember whether i updated xfce to a testversion 4.17 or only thunar. The ppa i used here is xubuntu-dev/experimental. Here the same no packages for 20.04.

Sorry my bad. I thought jammy was 20.04. There were alot of non-Xfce supporting library requirement increases for Xfce 4.18 - I wouldn't be surprised that those libraries aren't available in 20.04 and thats why its not feasible to update. You'll need a newer version of Ubuntu to be able to upgrade.

If the PPA doesn't exist anymore, I'm not sure how you would do it easily other than trying to re-create that PPA. Would you happen to know which PPA it is? Perhaps you could reach out to the owner and ask.

Edit: You mention the PPA above. On their launchpad page they have a means of contacting them. Perhaps you could ask why it was removed and if it is possible to get access to it again.

Re: Install Xfce 4.16+ on Ubuntu 20.04

I would recommend keeping your desktops and notebooks on the latest long terms release versions of Ubuntu.
You can reinstall or upgrade Ubuntu 20.04 using do-release-upgrade or the GUI equivalents.
Ubuntu 22.04 should be a fairly clean upgrade on most systems. Here is one how to for getting Xfce 4.18 on Ubuntu 22.04
