Session not saved [solved]

Had to move my entire setup to a new disk recently and just about everything is fine, but strangely xfce no longer remembers my session.  'Session and Startup > Automatically save session on logout' is ticked.  As far as I know I changed nothing, except that it's a new disk with new partition labels and of course new disk serial number -- which can't possibly matter. How can I dig into this?  Tx.

Re: Session not saved [solved]

Check the ownership and permissions of the ~/.cache/sessions folder. Alternatively, delete ~/.cache/sessions when not logged in as your user.

If your distro writes to ~/.xsession-errors, review that log file or alternatively, "journalctl --user -b 0" for the current user log in a systemd system.

Re: Session not saved [solved]

Check the ownership and permissions of the ~/.cache/sessions folder.

I'm running as root so expecting permissions not to be an issue.

Alternatively, delete ~/.cache/sessions when not logged in as your user.

Will try if nothing else works.

If your distro writes to ~/.xsession-errors, review that log file or alternatively,

I'll delete the file then try a restart in order to get 'fresh' messages.  In the mean time: (Not that I'm expecting you to wade thru all this ...)

Re: Session not saved [solved]

In 'Current Session' I hit 'Save Session', rebooted and everything is there.  So I don't know if that's what did it.  I deleted the file, and it still seems very unhappy tho nothing seems broken:

xfwm4:876): xfwm4-WARNING **: 15:23:57.273: Pixmap definition contains invalid number attributes (expecting at least 4, got 0)

There is something wrong with your xfwm4 theme. Which one are you using?

(xfce4-panel:920): garcon-CRITICAL **: 15:24:00.125: garcon_gtk_menu_get_desktop_actions_menu: assertion 'actions != NULL' failed

See: https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/garcon/-/issues/17. Should be fixed in recent versions of xfce4-panel. What version are you using?

Another notification daemon is running, exiting

You have more than one notification daemon installed and there is a potential conflict - one of them is exiting.

The rest are warnings or inconsequential messages. The xfce4-power-manager ones are currently being corrected.

Where indicated?  I've fooled around with that, but can't remember where or how.

2 /usr/bin 0 % xfce4-panel -V
xfce4-panel 4.16.2 (Xfce 4.16)

Awfully nice of you to wade into this with me ToZ.

xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/theme

2 /usr/bin 0 % xfce4-panel -V
xfce4-panel 4.16.2 (Xfce 4.16)

It will be fixed in a later version. You can ignore the message for now - I believe it impacts the "Desktop Actions" section of your .desktop files.

Where indicated?

What does the following return:

ps -ef | grep -E 'notific|dunct'

Awfully nice of you to wade into this with me ToZ.

No worries - glad I can help.

Re: Session not saved [solved]

Interesting. It would appear that xfce4-notifyd is trying to start twice. If you don't use saved sessions, try clearing them. Best way is to delete the contents of ~/.cache/sessions before you log in.
