There are uncommon situations with my PC where Thumberd (I think that's the name) starts to use too much CPU without aparent reason. After closing it (SIGTERM) Thunar may start acting excessively slow.
As means to handle that, I want to try restarting Thunar. However, I can't find a reliable way to restart Thunar and, at the same time, restore all windows that were previously opened without restarting xfdesktop (either rebooting or closing all windows and restart the desktop). If I simply restart the desktop, all programs with windows crash in the process.
How do I restart Thunar and only Thunar?

maybe you turn off these 2 things.
sudo nano /etc/xdg/tumbler/tumbler.rc
###
# Video Thumbnailers
###
# ffmpegthumbnailer plugin
[FfmpegThumbnailer]
Disabled=true
Priority=2
Locations=
MaxFileSize=
# GStreamer plugin
[GstThumbnailer]
Disabled=true
Priority=1
Locations=
MaxFileSize=

In my specific case, I want those two so I rather not have them disabled. I prefer to restart Thunar from time to time instead

You can close, then open Thunar with:
thunar -q && thunar
but I think it wouldn't restore your Thunar windows in the same directories.
On the Tumbler side, there's this recent thread with some info.
Good luck!

The thing is that I want to restore the windows. Any alternatives?

maybe another file manager?
https://doublecmd.sourceforge.io/galler … Window.png
important to know: a tree on the left is available, the right window is resizeable (invisible) and the (many) tabs
remember their last folder. in the image the tabs are named with "System32" and "Landscapes"
and there are tab options to (re)store, lock, ... BUT it will take time to configure and it seems there is an
additional plugin required to view video thumbnails.

@brunoais, unfortunately, it is not currently possible to do this with the way that Thunar is programmed. The best you might be able to do is a workaround like what MrEen proposes (or something similar like this, or using another file manager if this functionality is important to you.
Here is a somewhat related bug report where the developer comments that it is not feasible to implement in thunar but maybe in xfwm4. Feel free to comment there if you wish to pursue the enhancement request.
Please remember to mark your thread [SOLVED] to make it easier for others to find
